Cedar Grove Lodge was conceived as a home that could offer both retreat and presence within a dramatic natural landscape. Surrounded by trees and changing seasonal light, the property had all the ingredients for something memorable, but the interior needed a stronger identity to match the setting. The goal was to create a residence that felt grounded, calm, and expansive without becoming rustic in a predictable or overly themed way.

From the beginning, the design direction focused on warmth, material honesty, and a softened contemporary sensibility. The clients wanted the home to feel elevated and architectural, but also deeply comfortable and easy to inhabit throughout the year. This led to an interior language built around natural finishes, rich texture, and carefully controlled contrast, allowing the landscape outside to remain central to the overall experience.

The planning of the lodge was guided by the desire to make the most of both openness and intimacy. Larger shared spaces were designed to feel generous enough for gathering, and taking in the views, while smaller zones were shaped to support rest, reading, and slower moments of retreat. Rather than treating the home as one continuous open volume, the layout was refined to create rhythm and emotional variation.
This balance was especially important in the main living areas, where scale can easily overpower comfort if not handled carefully. Furniture placement, ceiling treatments, and material transitions were all used to create subtle zones without interrupting the overall flow. The result is an interior that feels spacious and airy, but still warm enough to encourage lingering, conversation, and everyday use.

Materiality was central to the success of the project. A palette of timber, stone, wool, linen, and brushed metal was chosen to echo the natural setting while bringing depth and tactile richness into the home. These materials helped create a visual language that felt robust and rooted, yet still refined enough to support the cleaner architectural lines of the interior.
